The Play Series - Ibsen's Dolls House
In this series I have been exploring my response to Henrik Ibsen's 'The Dolls House'. It's a play that I have studied in my other role as a drama tutor, particularly the character of Nora, who is the doll in the title of the play. Written in 1879, at a time when women's lives were very different, it's hard to imagine the conflict for women in the world who did not choose to be wives or mothers. Where duty is a word without choice.
These paintings are imagined and I have added a modern twist to costumes, just as a theatre director may interpret a play I have used my own language as a visual artist. I feel that the observations about women's roles in marriage in this play are still as relevant today.
